UM Press Ends Its Contract to Distribute Pluto's Books

DU has obtained a copy of the following message confirming earlier reports that the University of Michigan Press is ending its relationship as Pluto Press's distributor.

Subject: Pluto press update

[Redacted],
I believe you were interested in the status of the distribution contract between Pluto Press and the University of Michigan Press. An update… the UM Press executive board recently completed a review of all current press distribution clients.. After careful examination, the UM Press Executive Board determined that the Pluto Press mission and procedures are not reasonably similar to UM Press as specified by the guidelines and therefore do not meet the requirements to continue as a distribution client. As a result the contract was terminated, effective December 31, 2008.

Victory at WSU

Our friends at the Anti-Racist Blog are no longer online, at least for the moment. But last month marked a victory for them when the Wayne State University chapter of the Anti-Racist Action Network “officially decided” that they were ending their “Palestine solidarity campaign” at the Detroit campus, in the form of an anti-Israel divestment campaign. ("ARA Ends Divestment Campaign").

The ARA wanted "to stress that ARA was always an expression of an important strand of militancy both in the Arab and Muslim community and in the anti-imperialist and anti-racist social justice community." But no one at WSU gave a damn.

By contrast, our friends at the Anti-Racist Blog fought to expose the anti-Semitism and jihadist sympathies of the ARA Network.

The ARA Network describes itself on their website as an “international” group working “hard to ‘expose, oppose, and confront’ hate,” as well as fighting against all the usual isms, while at the same time standing courageously for “building a fun, diverse, liberated and explicitly anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-homophobic youth culture.” And, of course, they claim they’re against Nazis wherever they find them: “Whenever fascists are organizing or active in public, we're there. We don't believe in ignoring them or staying away from them. Never let the nazis have the street!”

Or at least, never let the Nazis have the whole street--or maybe share the street. Aw, heck, the truth is, the ideologically incoherent ARA Network is just hunky-dory with all kinds of thoroughly Nazi-compatible philosophies like Margaret Sanger’s genocide-through-abortion scheme, (and how exactly does abortion help Palestinians?), Jew-hatred, and the teachings and agenda of the Muslim Brotherhood, the historical allies of the Third Reich.

As the local ARA blog admits, the high point of their “campaign” at WSU “was perhaps our confrontation of Daniel Pipes in October of last year,” which impressed few but those in the ARA choir. (“Don’t Know Much About History”).

Good riddance. And Congratulations to our friends at the Anti-Racist Blog!

Jihad, Old School

Andrew G. Bostom at FrontPage Magazine, has written a lengthy, in-depth article exploring the real roots of Islamic anitsemitism ("Jihad and Islamic Antisemitism").

No surprise, Bostom finds that Islamic antisemitism didn't originate after centuries of peaceful coexistence with Jews, as a justifiable response to the founding of modern Israel.

He describes how contemporary calumnies against Israel and the Jews are

part of a central antisemitic motif in the Koran which decrees an eternal curse upon the Jews (Koran 2:61/ reiterated at 3:112) for slaying the prophets and transgressing against the will of Allah. It should be noted that Koran 3:112 is featured in the pre-amble to Hamas’ foundational Covenant. This central motif is coupled to Koranic verses 5:60, and 5:78, which describe the Jews transformation into apes and swine (5:60), or simply apes, (i.e. verses 2:65 and 7:166), having been “…cursed by the tongue of David, and Jesus, Mary’s son” (5:78). Muhammad himself repeats this Koranic curse in a canonical hadith (Sunan Abu Dawoud, Book 37, Number 4322), “He [Muhammad] then recited the verse [5:78]: ‘…curses were pronounced on those among the children of Israel who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary’ ”. And the related verse, 5:64, accuses the Jews—as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas did in a January 2007 speech, citing Koran 5:64—of being “spreaders of war and corruption,” a sort of ancient Koranic antecedent of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Bostom also takes a close look at the true meaning of "jihad," (“wag[ing] war, against unbelievers”), and that even America's first encounter with jihadism goes all the way back to her first days as a new nation:

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, then serving as American ambassadors to France and Britain, respectively, met in 1786 in London with the Tripolitan [modern Libya] Ambassador to Britain, Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja. These future American presidents were attempting to negotiate a peace treaty which would spare the United States the ravages of jihad piracy—murder, enslavement (with ransoming for redemption), and expropriation of valuable commercial assets—emanating from the Barbary states (modern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya). During their discussions, they questioned Ambassador Adja as to the source of the unprovoked animus directed at the nascent United States republic. Jefferson and Adams, in their subsequent report to the Continental Congress, recorded the Tripolitan Ambassador’s justification:

… that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.

Thus an aggressive jihad was already being waged against the United States almost 200 years prior to America becoming a dominant international power in the Middle East. Moreover, these jihad depredations targeting America antedated the earliest vestiges of the Zionist movement by a century, and the formal creation of Israel by 162 years—exploding the ahistorical canard that American support for the modern Jewish state is a prerequisite for jihadist attacks on the United States.

The UN Wondering If Free Speech Has Had Its Day

I suppose one advantage to being a small, insignificant blog is that we may escape the notice of the enforcement powers of the United Nations Durban II conference. Because according to Durban II’s definitions, since we are regular champions of freedom of expression, and regularly commit the crime of “Islamophobia.”

From National Review Online:
Redefining Anti-Semitism

At Durban II, only anti-Muslim racism counts.

By Anne Bayefsky

Geneva — Tuesday was Day 2 of the United Nations hatefest known as the “first substantive session of the Durban Review Preparatory Committee,” now taking place in Geneva. Delegates rolled up their sleeves, and the Jewish and Western-bashing exercise entered a new phase.

The Egyptian representative gave a good summary of most everything wrong with Durban II. He claimed the conference and its preparatory process should focus on criminalizing “racial profiling,” “racism in the media,” “the challenges posed by Islamophobia since the events on 9/11,” and “instrumentalization of democratic processes for racist applications.” In short, racism is an evil Western plot to victimize Muslims, who can only be protected by the undermining of democracy, freedom, and law enforcement.

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka was more philosophical. In his words, “the relationship between racial discrimination and freedom of expression is a complex and dialectical one; more freedom of expression is not an antidote to racial discrimination.”

The Algerian Ambassador took the U.N. Durban II platform to claim “anti-semitism . . . targets . . . Arabs who are also Semites, and by extension, the whole Muslim community.” Defining anti-Semitism this way has become a key component of the Durban II strategy, since once the concept has been Islamicized, Muslim states are happy to shout about taking it very seriously, confident that Western UN-ophiles still won’t catch on to their game.

While the European Union attendees stayed in their seats, the assault on democracy carried on. Algeria said “freedom of expression spread[s] hatred and violence and lead[s] to the burning of mosques in ‘advanced’ countries.” Syria ranted about “the crimes that are perpetrated in the name of democracy” and the “killers” that “are countries that advocate democracy . . . and give [a] free hand to perpetrate massacres.”

U.N. “expert” Doudou Diene from Senegal — whose name has been bandied about as a possible successor to the current U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, who retires in June — worried about “groups that have instrumentalized the freedom of expression” and the so-called “ideological freedom of expression.” According to Diene, “we should no longer use freedom of expression as the ideological tool [it is] . . . today.” The “Danish caricatures” cannot be tolerated in the name of freedom of expression “anymore.”

Though the United States is boycotting the forum, American taxpayers will be surprised to learn that — if the U.N. gets its way — they are still paying for it. The U.N. Secretariat revealed a new end-run around the U.S. promise not to fund Durban II. The secretariat announced that they had cut their original $7 million price tag for the preparatory side of Durban II in half. The other half will be “absorbed in existing resources” — a euphemism for using funds already in U.N. coffers, 22 percent of which are from American taxes. Washington is now faced with ensuring that this brazen attempt to avoid official American policy does not succeed.

And the EU is faced with the impossible task of keeping a straight face while speechifying that Durban II is good for human rights.

ADC: Let's Stamp Out Anti-Semitism, Israel

Take a second to check out the ADC’s online press release condemning next week’s Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. (“ADC Leads Effort Against Hate Campaign on Campus”).

You will find there the expected fulminations against the “hate speech” anticipated from speakers like David Horowitz, Ann Coulter, Daniel Pipes, and Robert Spencer. There’s also a pretentious statement made by ADC Executive Director Kareem Shora. On the one hand, he agrees Horowitz, et al, are entitled to exercise free speech. But you know he isn't going to leave it there:

“However, ADC is seriously concerned that such a notorious lineup of racist, bigoted, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic speakers will serve not to educate but to promote hatred and spread misinformation and lies. Let us not forget that these are the same lies that have lead, and continue to lead, to hate crimes and attacks against minorities including African-Americans, Jews, Muslims, homosexuals, and others based on stereotypes. The points of view espoused by this campaign are not ones that belong in any reasonable debate as it serves to promote hatred of an entire religion or ethnic origin.”

Which only makes sense, as Shora keeps repeating, (including on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal this morning), that the ADC is a “civil rights organization.” So when the ADC condemned Ann Coulter last week, it's because they’re all about stopping anti-Semitism.

Then, take a look at the left-hand margin of the webpage at this map, captioned “History of Palestine,” but strangely giving no sign of the existence of the State of Israel.

The ADC borrowed the map from USA Today, (where it's bigger), where it was originally used to depict Palestine right after World War II, before Israel became a state. The ADC could easily have found a graphic representing modern Israel, but likes this one.

And right above their map is the reason why they like it: their “ADC Factsheet” explains that “The illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian land is the foremost obstacle to peace.”

In other words, no Israel = peace.

But Horowitz, Pipes, Coulter, and Spencer are the anti-Semites.
